Woods & Finishes
Cabinetry Woods & Finishes
At Legacy Cabinets, we build with four of today’s most popular wood species—oak, maple, cherry, and hickory. Each carries its own unique characteristics and natural variances, and understanding those differences will help you make the best choice for your space.
CHERRY
- Smooth, tight grain
- Rich coloring that ranges from white to deep reddish-brown
- Deepens and mellows with age due to its unique photosensitivity
MAPLE
- Strong, evenly textured wood with a straight to wavy grain pattern
- Closed grain that sands to a smooth finish
- Uniform patterning with occasional mineral streaks, worm tracks, or bird’s-eye figures for added character
- Very dense and hard, which can result in more visible natural expansion and contraction at the joints
HICKORY
- Smooth in texture with a very prominent grain pattern
- Dramatic color and shade variation ranging from white to medium brown
- Often features bird pecks, small knots, and mineral streaks that add to its character
OAK
- Warm, strong species with a pronounced, open grain that sands to a semi-smooth finish
- Stains easily, with warm color variation from reddish-tan to medium brown
- Occasional pin knots and mineral streaks add to its natural character
MDF / THERMOFOIL
- Man-made, produced using high-quality ¾” medium density fiberboard (MDF)
- Wrapped in a durable vinyl product called Thermofoil using heat and pressure, creating a seamless, consistent finish
- Smooth and essentially non-porous—making it water-resistant, stain-resistant, and easy to clean
Finish Options
Beyond traditional paints and stains, Legacy offers additional finish options including custom colors, glazing techniques, and distressing.
